A Study on Subjective Symptoms of the Sailors exposed to Organic solvents in Painting the Vessel

Abstract
To study the relationship between eposure to mixed organic solvents and subjective symptoms, organic solvent concentration in air and urinary hippuric acid were measured and subjective symptoms questionnaire and work
ing conditions were surveyed in
32
sailors painting the Vessel from August to October, 1993
1. The recognized harzardous agents in study subjects were chemicals(28.1%), noise(21.9%) and chemical gases(21.9%) and complained to overloading works(89.6%) and harmful environmental conditions(71.9%) at overhoul of Vessel.
2. The exposed organic solvents were xylene, 111 TCE, TCE, MIBK and Hexan, but the mean of concentrion in the air(0.8¡¾0.7) did not exceed TLV-TWA
3. The average number of symptoms complained during work(12 questions), general symptoms for the past 3 month(55 questions) were 8.4 and 11.8 numbers, respectively.
4. The most frequent complained during work was "Irritation in eyes" and overall prevalence of symptoms was significantly higher in exceded TLV-TWA than in not exceeded TLV-TWA(p<0.001).
